Spotify has brought listening with friends to another level with Jam, after the release of Collaborative Playlists and Blend.

Based on some popular social features and personalization technology, Jam is a real-time listening session and upgraded version of Group Session with more features. With Jam, Premium subscribers can invite others to enjoy a musical experience made exclusively for everyone listening and contribute through a shared queue. You can use Jam to listen together via Bluetooth, AirPlay, or WiFi speakers such as Sonos, Bose, Google, or Amazon, no matter if you are listening in the same room or apart.

How Jam works?

Premium listeners around the world can invite anyone to join Jam on Spotify. just invite your team and Jam will help you find the best songs to add to your queue, find overlaps in your listening preferences, and recommend music that everyone will love.

Everyone in the Jam can add songs to the queue, play, pause, skip, change the volume, see who added which song, and receive recommendations, all from their own devices. Jam host can also turn off “Guest controls” so only the host can change the volume and what’s playing. When all “Guest controls” are turned off, guests can only queue.

How to start a Jam?

Premium listeners can start a Jam and invite your squad. Free listeners can only join the Jam.

On Mobile

  1. Select a playlist(public playlists such as RapCaviar, Hot Country, Today’s Top Hits, or your own playlists) or song you want to share.
  2. Click the speaker icon at the bottom of your screen or hit the three dot menu within your favorite playlist or song and find the “Start a Jam” button.
  3. You can also select a device to play on, whether that’s your phone or speaker.
  4. Invite your squad in one of three ways:
    • Turn on Bluetooth, then tap your phones together
    • Have your friends scan the QR code on your host screen
    • Hit “share” to send the link through social, text, SMS, and more

Spotify automatically starts a Jam when you’re connected to a smart speaker or most Bluetooth speakers. Users on the same WiFi will receive an invitation to join your Jam once you open the Spotify app. If you and others have Bluetooth permissions enabled, others will receive your Jam invitation by tapping your phone. You can disable this feature in the Device Picker.

  1. Tap Connect device.
  2. Switch Others can start or join a Jam on this speaker on .

    or scan the QR code,
or tap your phones together if you’re logged in on Spotify and your Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Choose listening tracks remotely or in-person. Premium plan users can join a Jam remotely and use different devices / speakers. Free plan users can only join the host in person.
  3. Tap Join.
  4. Now you can add tracks, or use Spotify recommendations that let you know if others in the Jam like those songs.

How to listen to Spotify Jam on separate devices?

Make sure when you are inviting others to join using a link. The QR code or Bluetooth method may not show the ability for others to join remotely as those methods are mostly intended for others to join locally.

When someone tap the invite link and opens the Spotify app, they will see a popup that asks them if they want to join and listen on their own device, or join and listen locally on your device.

Note: Premium plan is required to join a Jam remotely and listen on your own device.
