If you love a song or playlist on Spotify and want to explore something similar, Autoplay is a convenient way to keep the music going without searching around. It recommends new music inspired by what you’re playing. However, songs recommended by Autoplay may not always align with your taste. If you want more control over your music, you can easily turn it off. Follow this guide to learn how to enable or disable Autoplay on Spotify.

What Is Spotify Autoplay

When you finish listening to a playlist, album, or selected songs, Spotify Autoplay will automatically add and play recommended tracks to your playing queue. These songs are chosen by Spotify algorithms based on your listening history, genre you were playing, songs popularity, and more.

The Autoplay transitions can be so smooth that you might not even notice Autoplay has started. To find out what songs will be played automatically, click or tap the play queue button on Spotify.

However, sometimes Autoplay might play songs you don’t enjoy, making you want to turn it off. To manage Autoplay settings, you’ll need to use the Spotify app. Spotify web player doesn’t currently support turning this feature on or off.

How to Turn On/Off Autoplay on Spotify Mobile

  1. Open the Spotify app on your iOS or Android device.
  2. Tap your profile image and select “Settings and privacy.”
  3. Select “Playback.”
  4. Find Autoplay and turn it on or off.

Spotify Autoplay vs. Smart Shuffle

Smart Shuffle and Autoplay are two Spotify features to add recommendations to your listening session. Both play uninterrupted music on Spotify but with different highlights.

Smart Shuffle mixes similar tracks into your current play queue, generally suggesting one song for every three tracks (Recommended songs are marked with a sparkle symbol). Autoplay, on the other hand, kicks in after your chosen music ends and continues playing.

Another significant distinction is availability: Smart Shuffle is exclusive to Spotify Premium subscribers on iOS and Android, while Autoplay is available to both Free and Premium users. These two features are accessible to all users on the desktop app.

Controlling these features is different as well. Smart Shuffle can be enabled or disabled directly on the playlist, while you need to go to Settings to turn Autoplay on or off. In addition, Smart Shuffle settings apply only to the current playlist, meaning you need to turn it on or off each time you listen to a different playlist or album. However, once enabled or disabled, Autoplay works for all music content you play.
