Essentially have 2 or more friends listen to music in sync, somewhat like a listening party. With an admin that picks which songs, or the ability to make queues. The main purpose is to have the ability to listen to music together with a friend or friends on Spotify. During a group session, all participants, regardless of their location, have the ability to control the playback.

You and your friends/family can now each listen to the same content at the same time on your own devices (as well as control playback). You can start a group session by sharing a “join” link via messaging apps or social media with each other. Group sessions currently support 2-5 people in the same session.

However, it’s important to note that the Spotify group session feature is exclusively accessible to Premium users on mobile and tablet devices and speakers. Unfortunately Spotify group listening or group session is not available on PC even after 3 years. So are there any alternatives? Yes, you can use Discord. Linked Spotify your account and other people can join you.

Option 1 Join a group session on mobile and switch to PC

For Premium users.

While you cannot currently start the Group Session from the desktop app, you can switch the playback to the desktop app after starting or joining the session in the mobile app.

After joining a session on your phone, open Spotify on PC and the Group Session is playing. Then just change it to play on the PC speakers. However you have no ability to add to the queue or control playback.

Option 2 Play Spotify on Discord

Spotify premium is not needed. If you Listen Along with a friend who has the free version of Spotify, you hear silence when they hear adverts.

1. Connect Spotify To Discord

To get started with Spotify integration on Discord, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Discord app and click on the cog wheel next to your username to access User Settings.
  2. In User Settings, navigate to “Connections.”
  3. Connect your Spotify account by selecting the Spotify tile and logging in with your Spotify credentials.

Once your Spotify account is connected, you can customize how it appears on your Discord profile. To do this, go to User Settings > Connections, and there you can toggle “Display on Profile” and “Display Spotify as your status” on. This way, your friends and fellow Discord users can see what you’re listening to and enjoy a more immersive experience with your music preferences.

To disconnect, click the x icon to the right of your Spotify profile and then click Disconnect.

2. How to invite your friends?

While Spotify is playing, click the + in your text box to invite your friend(s) to listen with you. You can send this either through a Direct Message, Group Direct Message, or even through a specific channel.

Upon generating your invite, you will receive a Message Preview allowing you to review it. Furthermore, you’ll have the option to include a comment before sending it out.

Once you send the invite, your friends can click “Join” to tune in and enjoy your sweet tunes together.

Notably, the invite link is dynamic and will automatically update as you change songs. If you pause your music, the invite will indicate that the session has ended. However, once you resume playing, it will update again, keeping the link current.

3. How to join someone in profile?

Once a Discord account is connected to Spotify, the music being played can be seen on both the mini and full profiles, provided the feature is enabled.

If someone is actively using Spotify, you have the option to use “Play on Spotify” or “Listen Along” to join them while simultaneously viewing their profile. This way, you can enjoy the music together in real-time and share the listening experience.

You can’t Listen Along when voice chatting. Try text chatting instead.

What’s the difference between Spotify group session and Collaborative playlists?

Spotify offers two distinct social features for music enthusiasts: Group Sessions and Collaborative Playlists. Here’s a breakdown of their differences:

  1. Spotify Group Session:
    • Allows multiple users to listen to the same music simultaneously, irrespective of their physical locations.
    • Participants can interact with the playback, queue songs, and make real-time changes to enhance the shared listening experience.
    • Offers an interactive way for friends or colleagues to enjoy music together, with everyone having a say in what plays.
    • Exclusive to Spotify Premium users.
  2. Collaborative Playlists:
    • Enables users to create playlists that can be edited and modified by multiple people.
    • When a playlist is set as collaborative, it can be shared with others who can add, remove, or rearrange tracks within the playlist.
    • Facilitates collective music curation and collaboration among users, allowing everyone to contribute to building a playlist over time.
    • Available for both Spotify Premium and Free users.

In essence, Group Sessions provide a real-time shared listening experience, granting participants control over the music, while Collaborative Playlists emphasize the collaborative creation and modification of playlists among multiple users.
