How to download music on Apple Music?

By subscribing to Apple Music, you have access to any song from its vast catalog online. Additionally, you can download music for offline listening on iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple Watch, Mac and PC. This means you can enjoy your favorite tunes even without an internet connection.

Please note that you need an active Apple Music subscription to download songs. Also, make sure you have sufficient storage space available on your device for the downloaded music.

1. Download Apple Music songs and playlists on iPhone, iPad or Android device

1.1 How to download Apple Music songs, playlists, and albums

1. Open the Apple Music app.

2. Open an album and playlist, tap the + icon on the top right corner to add it to the Library. Then the + icon turns to an arrow icon, tap it again to download the playlist.

3. Or tap the three-dots icon on the top right corner and choose Add to a Playlist. You can select an existing playlist or create a new playlist. Then go to Library > Playlists, find the playlist and tap the download icon on the top right corner to download all songs.

4. For songs, tap the three-dots icon to the right of the song and select Add to Library or Add to a Playlist. Then tap the three-dots icon again and tap Download.

When you add a playlist to the Library, songs in the playlist won’t appear in Library – Songs. However, when you add an album to Library, songs in the album are also added to Library – Songs, which is annoying. Currently there is no way to add an album without adding all the songs to your library like you can in Spotify.

1.2 How to turn on Automatic Downloads?

On your iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Music, scroll down and turn on Automatic Downloads. After that, music automatically downloads for offline listening when added to your library or purchased in the iTunes Store.

1.3 How to delete music on iPhone, iPad, or Android device?

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Go to the Library and tap Downloaded. On your iPad, tap Downloaded in the sidebar.
  3. Find the song, album, playlist or music video that you want to remove.
  4. Touch and hold the item.
  5. Tap Remove Download to remove the item from only this device. Or select Delete from Library to delete the item across all of your devices.

1.4 How to free up music storage on iPhone?

If your iPhone is running low on storage space, you have the option to automatically remove downloaded music that you haven’t played in a while. Simply go to your device’s Settings, navigate to Music, and select Optimize Storage.

2. How to download Apple Music songs on Mac and PC

2.1 With the Apple Music app

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. Click +Add icon to add the playlist to your Library.
  3. Click the download button.

2.2 With iTunes on PC

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. Click +Add to add the playlist to your Library.
  3. Click the download button. You can download the whole album/playlist or individual songs.

Downloaded Apple Music songs are saved to C:\Users\YourUsername\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Apple Music.

3. How to download Apple Music content on Apple Watch

  1. Open the Music app on your Apple Watch.
  2. Tap Listen Now or Search, then navigate to the music you want to add.
  3. Tap a playlist or album, tap …, then tap Add to Library.
  4. To download the music to Apple Watch, tap … again, then tap Download.

4. How to download music that you purchased from the iTunes Store

4.1 On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Android device

  1. Open the iTunes Store app. On iPad, tap Purchased. On iPhone or iPod touch, tap More > Purchased.
  2. Tap Music.
  3. Find the music that you want to redownload, then tap it.
  4. Tap the download button next to a song or album.

4.2 On Mac

  1. Open the Apple Music app.
  2. From the menu bar at the top of your screen, choose Account > Purchased. 
  3. Find the music that you want to redownload. 
  4. Click the download button next to a song or album.

By default, the songs you downloaded are stored in ~/Music/Music/Media folder.

4.3 On PC

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Account > Purchased.
  3. Choose Music from the menu in the upper-left corner of the iTunes window.
  4. Find the music that you want to redownload. 
  5. Click the download button Download button next to a song or album.
