According to Spotify’s third quarter 2022 financial performance, Spotify Reaches 456 Million Monthly Active Users with 195 million Premium subscribers. Music streaming platform Spotify has many features and tools to help you customize your listening experience to your tastes, allowing you to craft everything from easy playlists to high-energy workout mixes. Smart speaker from Amazon, Google, and Apple is becoming more and more widely used. For HomePod users, Apple Music is likely to be the preferred service.
Apple announced that it would be adding third-party music service support to HomePod at the 2020 Worldwide Developers Conference. In addition to Apple Music, these devices can now directly integrate with other streaming services including Deezer, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, YouTube Music, and Pandora. Once any of these services have been linked, HomePod users can say things like 'Siri, play rock music on Pandora,' or 'Siri, play Twenty One Pilots on Deezer.' Unfortunately, the music streaming giant Spotify is still missing from the list. Even worse, there's no clear timeline for when (or if) these services will be added.
If you want to stick with Spotify but want to play music on HomePod, here are 2 options.
The Apple HomePod does not come with Bluetooth connectivity, unlike the Amazon Echo or Google Nest speakers. Third-party music streaming services like Spotify need to implement components in their services in order to implement Siri support on the HomePod, or rely on your phone or tablet's AirPlay connection to stream playlists. You don’t need to subscribe to Spotify Premium to play songs on a HomePod.
One of the options to play Spotify music on HomePod speakers is via AirPlay, which is frustratingly slow and lacks voice controls - one of the big draws of using a smart speaker at all.
The HomePod mini doesn’t support Spotify Connect, so the only way to send audio to it from a device is via Apple’s AirPlay. Android and Windows devices lack AirPlay connectivity. This leaves you with only an iPhone, iPad or Mac to stream Spotify on your HomePod. Launch Spotify on iOS or Mac and use Airplay to connect to HomePod mini and then control the music from Spotify app.
On your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
1. Make sure the HomePod has already been set up and it's operating properly.
2. Make sure your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch and Homepod Mini are in same WiFi, and both devices are up to date.
3. Open Spotify and tap Spotify Connect icon.
4. Tap AirPlay or Bluetooth and then select your HomePod or HomePod mini
Alternatively, choose HomePod from the AirPlay menu in iOS Control Center.
iOS 17 has added a new feature that allows you to use the Siri to start your Spotify session directly on your HomePod, hands-free.
Now you can say, “Hey Siri, play The National on Spotify” to your HomePod, and Siri will send commands through your phone and start streaming Spotify on your smart speakers.
Once music is playing from your phone to the HomePod, you can use your phone volume buttons at anytime to control the volume of the HomePods, even if the screen is locked.
1. Invoke Siri on your iPhone either by pressing the side/home/power button of your iPhone or iPad or using the “Hey Siri” command.
2. Ask the personal assistant to play a song, album, or artist.
3. If you are using multiple music apps, Siri will present you with a list of all the music apps and request you to select the preferred app.
4. Next, Siri will ask for your permission to access your data. “I’ll need to access your Spotify data to this. Is that OK?” Tap on Yes to proceed.
That’s it! For example, say “Hey Siri, play Tycho mix on my HomePod” started playing that Spotify playlist on your HomePod via AirPlay from my phone.
On your Mac
You can use Spotify web player or the native Mac app. Let’s take Spotify desktop app as an example here.
1. Play music with Spotify app on your Mac.
2. Click the AirPlay button at the top of the Music window, then select the tickbox next to HomePod. Whatever song you were playing in Music on your computer now plays on HomePod too.
That's because instead of updating its service to take advantage of AirPlay 2 (which has virtually no lag), Spotify is still using the old Airplay 1 protocol.
To avoid the Spotify delays on HomePod, the alternative is to download Spotify music to MP3 and then AirPlay them to HomePod as local music without Spotify app.
